Trying Out Twitter

Posted on October 23, 2008 in: Culture, Tech

Is Twitter just a useless exercise in vanity or might it provide data to better understand one another?

Trying Twitter
It’s “all me all the time” with Twitter but I’m trying to figure out if it’s actually useful for an old net.fogey like myself. Photo by Nathan Makan.

My new friend, Cynthia, convinced me to give Twitter a try after I’d derided it as a useless exercise in vanity. My recent iPhone purchase made it a more tenable proposition. And even Mac-technology expert Adam Engst confessed his early dismissal may have premature.

Update: Engst gave up on Twitter after a few months. Just made it too difficult to focus, says he.

I also came across this blog posting at the Twitter site that noted how Twitter traffic peaked at significant points in the final presidential debate. Data like this is compelling. And after trying Twitter for a couple of days, I’ve kinda sorta become addicted. Question is, is anyone else interested? I’m still waiting to find out. The challenge is making your tweets (I hate that term; I prefer twitterpation) interesting, informative or quirky.
