Celebrated Jumping Frog Leaps Again (Electronically)

Posted on January 17, 2010 in: Culture, Media

Though long in the public domain, there’s no complete electronic version of Mark Twain’s debut book, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County and Other Sketches, and Amazon’s Kindle store and iPhone app proved disappointing. So I took matters into my own hands.

How to get the ebook and load it onto your iPhone/iPod Touch

Follow these steps:

  1. Download the book in ePub format.
  2. Open the Stanza desktop app on your computer.
  3. Pull down the Tools menu and select “Enable Sharing.”
  4. Pull down File > Open and select the book you just downloaded. (The_Celebrated_Jumping_Frog_of_Calaveras.epub). It will open up in a multicolumn window on your desktop. Leave it open.
  5. Ensure your iPhone/iPod is on the same wireless network as your desktop computer.
  6. Launch Stanza on your iPhone.
  7. From the top-level library menu, select Shared Books. You should see your computer name. Select it.
  8. Stanza Desktop will then notify you that your iPhone is attempting to connect to your shared library, and request your permission to allow the connection.
  9. Once you’ve granted permission, Stanza iPhone will display a list of books that are open in Stanza Desktop.
  10. Tap on the book to download it Stanza on your iPhone. It will appear in Titles and Recent Downloads.

Voila! If you run into any trouble, you can troubleshoot from Stanza’s FAQ page (select “How do I transfer books from my computer to my iPhone or iPod Touch?“ and scroll down to the section, “Sharing using Stanza Desktop.” The troubleshooting link is near the end of the section). Good luck!

Stanza is very easy to use on the iPhone (read the overview or watch the video “Quick Tour: Stanza in Action”). The ebook I made has a handy Table of Contents, plus a search engine (which is more than I can say about the Kindle ebook; seriously, Amazon — no search function?!).

In an upcoming Ask a Mac post, I’ll explain how I created the ebook. You can, too!

Thanks for this document. I used to make files from the Gutenberg Project into NewtonBooks, back when that was the state of the art, and then I turned a couple of my own documents into iPod Notes documents when that came along. I’ll be interested in that epub formatting how-to when you get to it.

Thanks also for the Stanza instructions. I didn’t realize that it could share locally from the computer, much less that the iPhone could then pick it up there.

Project Gutenberg was my go-to site to find this book, but I was surprised to see that, like many sources, they had an electronic version of only the ‘Jumping Frog’ short story but few of the other sketches.
